Pablo Picasso couldn’t have been more accurate when he said, “The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” Art is a form of creative expression that eases the mind and soothes the spirit – both for the artist and for the viewer.
The beach environment of Destin and 30A is a source of inspiration for all types of artists, including painters, sculptors, potters, jewelers, and others. Lucky for us, Gulf Place in South Walton provides the perfect location to showcase a variety of this incredible artwork. Gulf Place is one of 30A’s quaint communities, and it features a colorful vibe and relaxed atmosphere. These qualities blend together to create a magnetic force that attracts inspired artists and art appreciators. It was in this creative atmosphere that the Artists of Gulf Place decided to set up shop. And we’re so glad they did!
Situated around the grassy outdoor amphitheater, the Artists at Gulf Place is a collection of eight open-air galleries, where visitors can find an eclectic assortment of art by local 30A artists. This includes watercolor and acrylic paintings, photography, jewelry, recycled art, furniture, painted windows, glass art, t-shirts, and so much more.
The featured artists exhibit a variety of techniques, designs, and colors. For example, potter Dwight Ward offers work that encompasses a feeling of nature, from earthy stoneware to sculpture raku. His subjects often include elements of nature, such as fish and leaves and natural colors. Self-taught artist David J. Hansel, on the other hand, draws his inspiration directly from the sea. In his bio, Hansel says, “There’s a peace and tranquility that seems to wash the soul of all cares. Seeing its vastness puts life’s issues in divine perspective.” His beach-inspired work includes pieces such as canvas art, Christmas ornaments, and painted guitars. Fellow artist Richard Weber’s motivation also stems from the beach, relying heavily on nautical and coastal subject matter. He combines this inspiration with photography and painting techniques to create canvas originals and giclée prints. Jeweler Diane Taliaferro adds her vision to the Artists of Gulf Place, presenting unique jeweled pieces of sterling silver, Swarovski crystals, natural stones, and lampwork beads. These artists and others form the colorful and vibrant atmosphere that visitors have come to love about this artistic hub!
Not only does the Artists at Gulf Place provide art for sale, but it also offers fun events and classes. Every third Thursday, it participates in a Wine Walk with other Gulf Place merchants, in which attendees can sample wines and appetizers, listen to live music, and win giveaways, all while enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of Gulf Place. Other events include a Tie-Dye Hippy Workshop, Snow Globe Aquariums, Painting Nautical Wooden Cutouts, and Sand Prints with Patty. These events give you the chance to explore your own inner artist!
With all of this creativity in one place, it is impossible not to feel inspired when you visit the Artists at Gulf Place. Whether you’re a local or visitor, this art hub is well worth a visit. The surrounding merchants, restaurants, and coffee shops provide even more places to explore. Plus, the beach is right across the street – making it easy to pop on over for an artsy pick-me-up after soaking up some sun.
