September can be a long month, especially if you didn’t get a vacation during the summer. Why wait until Thanksgiving for a getaway? Halloween is as good a time as any to get away, especially if you’re heading to Walton County, Florida! It offers plenty, such as:
The Weather
By the end of October, summer has had its last hurrah, and fall is in full swing. For those who adore pumpkin flavorings and Halloween decorations this is great, but for folks from colder climates it foretells shoveling snow and heating bills. Take a break from the impending cold and visit South Walton, where the temperatures hang in the 70s and 80s! Plus, you can entertain yourself at some of these events!
Embrace your Witchiness with the Witches of South Walton
Each year, on the morning of Halloween, a coven convenes. They only appear once a year, manifesting from the county woods to spread a wicked glee as they ride unabashedly down the streets! In fact, the Witches of South Walton are women dedicated to raising money for the Children’s Volunteer Health Network. Their fundraising efforts have become more and more successful over the past decade, and now their annual bike ride includes a pre-ride party, post-ride breakfast, and a raffle! They ride about 2.2 miles to Butler Elementary to greet the children there as they begin their day. If you want to be a witch this Halloween, bike rentals are free! Just go to the Witches of South Walton website to register, and make a difference this Halloween!
A Good Old-Fashioned Corn Maze
While it’s a bit of a drive from South Walton, this is great for some of the visitors who don’t get to enjoy corn mazes back home. Held at Hammack Farms, this five-acre corn maze attracts visitors from across the panhandle of Florida. But the maze is just part of the fun; the day out can include picking pumpkins to decorate and a classic hay ride, all traditional fall fun-time activities.
Noche de los Muertos
On October 28th, Alys Beach is hosting its annual Noche de los Muertos. This costume party is for adults only—it’s a great excuse to really go wild on your vacation! There are cash prizes for best costume, so rest assured you’ll see some amazing creations. Costumes are required, and the tickets are $50 to $60. Head to the Caliza Pool for this party!
